Improving Speech Audio for Prerecorded and Live Online Conference Sessions
Learn how to identify impaired speech and avoid its causes. Listen to audio clips that demonstrate six useful tips for online conference and meeting organizers, as well as contributors who plan to speak during a live online event or submit a pre-recorded talk. Very often, common impairments can be reduced or eliminated with minimal effort and expense. Read NTIA Technical Memorandum 24-571 detailing the research and analysis that inspired this short video.
00:10 Introduction.
00:45 Tip 1) Select the quietest available speaking location and avoid locations with excessive reverberation.
01:12 Tip 2) Adjust hardware and software audio level controls to the highest level that does not cause excessive clipping or hard limiting.
01:35 Audio example of clipping.
01:44 Audio example of hard limiting.
01:49 Tip 3) External microphones (even inexpensive ones) can have significant advantages over built-in microphones. They can be optimally positioned for less noise and reverberation and better spectral balance.
02:03 Audio example of noise.
02:10 Audio example of reverberation.
02:44 Audio example of too little low-frequency sound.
02:54 Audio example of too much low-frequency sound.
03:08 Audio example of too little mid-frequency sound.
03:17 Audio example of too much mid-frequency sound.
03:30 Audio example of too little high-frequency sound.
03:39 Audio example of too much high-frequency sound.
03:42 Tip 4) Use the minimal amount of noise suppression required. Overly aggressive noise suppression can create prominent artifacts, cause unstable speech levels and spectral balance, and can cause gating of the speech.
04:09 Audio example of gating.
04:12 Tip 5) Connect any text-to-speech (or other speech software) outputs directly to the recording system. Asking the microphone of one device to capture sound from the speaker of another device can result in high noise and extremely poor spectral balance.
04:35 Tip 6) When pre-recording a talk for a conference, record locally with recording software whenever possible. Setting up a “meeting” and recording it is likely to introduce significant additional impairments including lower rate speech coding and packet loss.

45:36 Requiring all R&D to be done solely in the US absolutely limits applicants as many of the experts are not in the US. The requirement should have been less heavy handed, striking a balance between cultivating US talent and leveraging non-US based expertise to accelerate development.

23:27 @NTIAGov I think there is a mistake when the instructor said that the values for Xi represent power?. In most spectrum analyzer user manuals i've come across the RMS detector mode uses the signal voltage for Xi. Thus effectively calculating RMS voltage which can then be converted into average power given a reference impedance. If Xi represented power, you would be calculating RMS power not average power. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

      @institutefortelecommunicat1216 6 місяців тому

Hello. This is the reply from Frank Sanders, via the Publications Office at the Institute for Telecommunication Sciences (ITS). The machines ordinarily measure power (voltage squared). They do not do ordinarily a direct voltage measurement. (The exception is a power meter with a bolometer head.) Having measured the input power through a log amp (unless the user has manually selected a linear-amp option-which is rare), the machine divides by 10 and antilogs to get to the voltage. Then they compute the average from multiple samples, and then log the result and multiply by 10 to get back to power. Older analog machines could not do this; they did not offer RMS power measurement options. The way they got close to it in the oldedd days was to use a narrow video bandwidth. The newer, digital machines offer the RMS feature described above. But again, it’s not a direct measurement of RMS.

I think the analogy is great. Providing context to something everyone already understands, makes it very easy to learn.

It's great how you're explaining, in layman's terms in the first two vids, but all of a sudden you're talking about SWIDS and SPDX and others. Perhaps taking a brief moment to explain what that means would have been helpful. Sure I can look it up, but seeing as how you took the time to explain the SBOM in the first two vids, this vid lacks some usefulness. Wondering why I bothered with the first two

Fun stuff. Designing and implementing test and measurement scenarios for radio systems was a fun part of my job at one time. As someone working in the satellite communications industry, co-existence with 5G in the same or adjacent bands is a hot topic so I've been following the radalt issue with interest. Good to see that the 5G equipment is living within its allocated parameters. Would be interesting to know how well the results lined up with information provided to the FCC as part of the FCC ID certification process.

56,000 watts at those frequencies. Cellular traffic in greater volumes than would ever be found in normal circumstances. Every model of tower/cellular system that could be deployed in the US. What an awesome, well done and intensive experiment. Most importantly, a definitive study showing the compatibility of 5g signals with RADALTS. Also, have to love the Army Blackhawk helicopter pilots seeing just how much they can push and prove the experiment - what a riot! I'm so glad I watched this; the educational value is great and the bits of humor make it so very well done. Great job to everyone on the team!
